Miroslav Klose (80)   Roberto Ayala (49)
Germany win 4-2 on penalties
Game 57

Final: Germany 1 Argentina 1 (aet). Germany win 4-2 on penalties

Post-match: There’s a big fracas on the pitch with Heinze looking particularly wound up. Rodriguez also wades in but it’s hard to say what went on.

Penalty 8: Cambiasso misses. Germany win the shootout 4-2 and are into the semi-finals.

Penalty 7: Borowski scores, sending Franco the wrong way. 4-2 Germany.

Penalty 6: Rodriguez scores low into the corner. 3-2 Germany.

Penalty 5: Podolski scores emphatically. 3-1 Germany.

Penalty 4: Ayala misses. Save by Lehmann. 2-1 Germany.

Penalty 3: Ballack scores with ease. 2-1 Germany.

Penalty 2: Cruz scores high into the net. 1-1.

Penalty 1: Neuville scores with a thumping drive. 1-0 Germany.

Germany will take the first penalty.

Extra-time FT: Germany 1 Argentina 1

120 mins: And there goes the whistle. This quarter-final will be decided by penalties.

120 mins: Free-kick to Argentina down the right after a tired challenge by Lahm. Rodriguez curls in the cross which Ballack heads clear.

119 mins: Just 60 seconds left.

119 mins: Tevez and Cambiasso try a one-two on the edge of the German box but the hosts clear.

118 mins: Ballack limps back on with what appears to be cramp.

118 mins: Germany break quickly but Lahm’s cross is headed clear and Argentina go on the counter. Tevez does superbly but then curls a shot over the bar.

117 mins: Heinze brings down Frings. Germany are continuing without Ballack.

116 mins: Borowski plays in Odonkor but his near-post cross is too near the goalkeeper. Ballack, meanwhile, is off the pitch receiving treatment.

115 mins: Lehmann watches Coloccini’s cross carefully although it clips the top of the bar before going behind. Good judgement?

115 mins: Tevez is tripped by Friedrich who is shown the yellow card.

114 mins: Fabricio Coloccini has a pop from distance but it fizzes wide of Lehmann’s post.

113 mins: Frings is fortunate to escape a booking which would have kept him out of the next game.

112 mins: Odonkor tricks Sorin but Cambiasso blocks the cross.

111 mins: Argentina look the most likely to nick it at the moment and win another corner. Rodriguez takes but Cruz’s looping header drops over the bar.

110 mins: Odonkor’s cross causes brief panic in the Argentina box but Podolski is booked for an infringement and the danger passes.

109 mins: Cruz is caught offside as Argentina float a ball into the Germany penalty area.

109 mins: Ballack heads the corner to safety.

108 mins: Heinze guides a free-kick back into the box but Germany clear. It drops to Tevez whose low cross is turned behind for a corner.

107 mins: Tevez feeds a pass into the box but Mertesacker cleans up.

106 mins: Careless pass from Lahm goes straight out but Argentina throw the ball back into their own half.

106 mins: Tevez goes for goal from deep but Lehmann is right behind it.

106 mins: The final 15 minutes. Can someone find a winner or are we destined for penalties? Ballack clearly isn’t fit but Germany, like Argentina, have used all their substitutes.

Extra-time HT: Germany 1 Argentina 1

105 mins: Tevez’s cross is headed out by Ballack and Gonzalez flashes a shot over the bar from a narrow angle. That’s the end of the first period of extra-time.

104 mins: Lovely link-up play by Cambiasso on the edge of the area but Cruz’s final ball is too heavy.

103 mins: Cruz overhits his through ball for Rodriguez but Germany gift them possession again.

102 mins: Neuville’s outswinger is headed over by Metzelder.

101 mins: Odonkor wins a corner off Sorin.

101 mins: Ballack shows great determination to win a tackle in midfield and find Odonkor but Germany can’t make any progress down the right.

100 mins: Neuville picks Heinze’s pocket but has to come deep and the move breaks down.

99 mins: Neuville’s free-kick is aimed at Ballack who takes a dive. Ayala had his hand on his shoulder but no way did Ballack need to go down like that. He’s lucky to escape a yellow card.

98 mins: Odonkor wins a free-kick after falling over Sorin who had slipped.

97 mins: Heinze heads back to Franco as the German frontmen try and latch onto Ballack’s pass.

96 mins: Odonkor shows clever skill to keep the ball in down the right. The move continues but Ayala shows his class to stop Neuville.

96 mins: Cruz is shown the yellow card after leading with his arm when jumping with Lahm.

95 mins: Tevez shows great energy levels to get back and help crowd out Odonkor.

94 mins: Play resumes.

93 mins: Tevez tries to dribble past four Germany defenders but is finally outnumbered. Play is held up after he takes a whack in the face from his own hand.

93 mins: Lahm’s cross is cleared by Mascherano.

92 mins: Ballack doesn’t look 100% fit but he’s still a threat out there.

91 mins: Cruz fells Metzelder with a clumsy left boot.

91 mins: Argentina get the first 15 minutes of extra-time under way.

Full-time: Germany 1 Argentina 1

90 + 4 mins: Rodriguez’s free-kick is headed out by Ballack for a throw. But before Sorin can take it, the full-time whistle goes. Extra-time. It’s been a brave fightback by Germany after Ayala’s opener and their equaliser was deserved. Can extra-time split the two teams or are we heading for penalties?

90 + 4 mins: Odonkor is booked for a tackle from behind on Cambiasso. Last chance for Argentina.

90 + 3 mins: Odonkor’s cross is headed clear.

90 + 2 mins: Heinze gets to the corner but can only float a header into the arms of Lehmann.

90 + 2 mins: Cruz’s cross is deflected behind by Frings.

90 + 1 mins: Argentina are doing the pressing now.

90 mins: Four minutes to be added.

89 mins: Late drama as Cruz’s cut-back is headed goalwards by Gonzalez but the Lehmann tips wide. However, the offside flag had gone up against Tevez.

88 mins: Rodriguez is shown the yellow card as he goes down under challenge from Lahm in the box. Diving says the ref.

87 mins: Argentina have used all three subs so if the game goes to extra-time they can’t bring on Lionel Messi.

86 mins: Lahm’s cross is too deep for Ballack as Germany press for a late winner.

86 mins: Germany bring on super-sub Oliver Neuville for goalscorer Klose.

85 mins: Franco makes a clean catch from Lahm’s cross.

85 mins: The lively Odonkor is causing Argentina all sorts of problems with his direct running.

84 mins: A cross into the Germany box is missed by two defenders before Ballack intercepts. Argentina appeal for handball but nothing is given.

83 mins: Tevez and Odonkor lock horns but the referee let’s them blow off steam without resorting to a card.

82 mins: Ayala heads clear as Ballack tries to pick out Klose.

82 mins: Lahm almost picks out Borowski who is running into the box.

81 mins: Germany are briefly down to 10 men as Ballack receives treatment. He looks to be struggling a little.

80 mins: GOAL KLOSE. Germany level the contest with just 10 minutes left. Ballack’s cross is flicked on by Borowski and Klose heads home to net his fifth goal of the tournament.

80 mins: Podolski’s knockdown finds Klose in the box but he’s falling as he hits the shot and Argentina get in the block.

79 mins: Another Argentine switch as Julio Cruz replaces Crespo.

78 mins: The pattern is established now. Germany are pressing and pressing with Argentina trying to catch them on the break.

77 mins: Borowski tries his luck from distance but Franco is behind it although he needs two bites of the cherry.

76 mins: Odonkor does well to get in a cross but Ayala deals with. Argentina break but Germany clear.

76 mins: Germany play a short free-kick to Podolski whose shot cannons back off the wall.

75 mins: Odonkor has his legs taken from him 25 yards out in a central position.

75 mins: Germany replace Schweinsteiger with Tim Borowski.

74 mins: Rodriguez stays down after a tackle and Germany’s frustrations continue.

73 mins: Great chance for Argentina as Tevez finds Rodriguez in space on the right corner of the box but his fierce shot finds the side-netting. A relief for Germany.

72 mins: The clock runs down again as Esteban Cambiasso comes on for Riquelme.

71 mins: Schweinsteiger tries to test the new goalkeeper with a ludicrously hopeful shot from over 40 yards and it flys well over.

70 mins: Germany are furious that the substitution is taking so long. Finally, Franco makes his way on.

69 mins: Ballack wins a cheap free-kick midway inside the Argentina half. But before the free-kick can be taken, Abbondanzieri signals that he can’t continue. Argentina will have to bring on substitute goalkeeper Leonardo Franco.

68 mins: Just over a quarter of the match to play. Can Germany keep their World Cup dream alive?

67 mins: In comes the corner from Schweinsteiger but Argentina head clear.

66 mins: Odonkor tries to dribble through down the right. Germany win a throw from which Ballack earns a corner.

66 mins: Boos from the crowd who feel Abbondanzieri is play-acting.

65 mins: Argentina goalkeeper Abbondanzieri requires treatment and play is held up.

64 mins: The corner is headed down to Ballack but there are bodies between him and the goal and his downward shot is blocked.

63 mins: The fleet-footed Odonkor gets in a cross and wins a corner.

63 mins: Schweinsteiger swings in a corner from the left but Argentina get there first and clear.

62 mins: An attacking substitution by Klinsmann as Odonkor comes on for Schneider.

62 mins: Lovely passing by Ballack but both Schweinsteiger and Lahm lose control.

61 mins: Germany are preparing to bring on forward David Odonkor.

60 mins: Mascherano trips Schneider just outside the box about 10 yards from the byeline and is booked. Podolski takes the free-kick but balloons it way over the bar. Whistles from the crowd.

59 mins: Schneider loses out as Germany try and up the pace.

58 mins: Lahm defends well to shepherd the ball behind with Rodriguez breathing down his neck.

57 mins: Frings plays a ball over the top but it’s too heavy for Podolski.

56 mins: Ballack shapes as if to shoot but plays a clever pass instead. No-one is on his wavelength however.

55 mins: Germany cut out Riquelme’s pass and break. But Argentina are keeping the door firmly shut.

54 mins: Heinze’s tackle from behind gives Germany a free-kick. Schneider curls in a dangerous one which Argentina clear with the goalkeeper in no-man’s land. Argentina break and Rodriguez finds space on the right. He cuts the ball back but Germany are there to defend and launch an attack of their own. Much better flow to the second half so far.

53 mins: The all-action Tevez is penalised for a foul.

52 mins: Ballack dinks a clever ball into the box but it’s over Klose.

52 mins: Schweinsteiger drives forward and tries to make space for a shot but Argentina clear.

51 mins: So what are Germany made of? This is the first time they’ve been behind in the whole tournament.

51 mins: Mascherano fires over from distance.

50 mins: Argentina press again but Sorin’s cross is headed clear.

49 mins: GOAL AYALA. Riquelme takes it to the centre of the penalty box and Ayala heads home powerfully after a fantastic leap above his marker.

48 mins: Corner to Argentina down the right as Lahm deflects Rodriguez’s cross behind.

47 mins: Podolski curls in the free-kick but Abbondanzieri makes a clean catch. He takes a quick kick downfield to Tevez who almost wriggles free. Argentina have a throw. It’s taken to Tevez who blasts wastefully over the bar.

46 mins: Early yellow card for Sorin who clatters Friedrich. He will now miss the semi-final if Argentina get through.

46 mins: Germany get the second half in play.

Half-time: Germany 0 Argentina 0

45 mins: Schweinsteiger takes but Crespo heads clear. And that’s half-time. A fascinating rather than exciting first half and both goalkeepers have hardly been troubled.

45 mins: Podolski wins a free-kick for Germany near the right corner flag. Could we see a dramatic end to the first half?

45 mins: Metzelder intercepts Riquelme’s through ball for Crespo.

44 mins: Ayala heads clear as Germany try and find Klose with a ball over the top.

43 mins: Tevez can’t control a crossfield pass from Rodriguez and Germany have a throw.

42 mins: Good possession for Argentina although it’s not hurting Germany who are happy to let them have it in the centre of the pitch.

41 mins: Tevez shows great strength to win a free-kick back in his own half.

40 mins: Riquelme has enjoyed stacks of possession but so far Germany have been quick to stop him creating too many moments of danger.

39 mins: Tevez tries to turn in the box but Germany have men back and clear their lines.

38 mins: Heinze finds Riquelme with long pass but Germany defend well and counter. The Germans look a million miles from the side who looked woeful at the back in the opening game against Costa Rica.

37 mins: Ballack briefly jogs to the sideline for treatment but it doesn’t look serious and he’s quickly back on.

36 mins: Riquelme takes a deep one and Roberto Ayala is penalised for a foul.

35 mins: Crespo is brought down on the right flank. Another free-kick for Argentina.

34 mins: Riquelme’s free-kick is headed clear by Metzelder from a crowded penalty area.

34 mins: Schneider is the latest German player to snap at Riquelme’s heels. The Argentina No.10 doesn’t like it.

33 mins: Riquelme plays a dangerous ball into the box but Lahm clears in front of Tevez.

32 mins: Frings bullies Riquelme off the ball and Lahm breaks down the left but again two defenders are on him. Both sides have really done their homework here.

31 mins: Ballack lacks options as he looks to spread play from the centre circle.

31 mins: Patient play by Argentina at the back before Riquelme is crowded out.

30 mins: Ballack’s deep cross is too long for Schweinsteiger and Argentina have a goalkick.

29 mins: The two number 10s clash as Ballack brings down Riquelme.

28 mins: Germany are enjoying more of the play now although Argentina look strong in defence.

27 mins: Riquelme finds Crespo in the box but the striker is penalised for handball.

26 mins: Schneider’s cross from the right is headed clear but Argentina are stopped in their tracks as they try and break.

25 mins: Lovely play by Ballack as he finds Lahm on the left but the full-back’s cross is overhit.

24 mins: Philip Lahm has two defenders on him as he tries to cut in from the left and he loses out.

23 mins: Gonzalez finds space through the middle but the move slows down and Ballack gets back to win possession.

23 mins: Germany try to break through Podolski but Argentina are quickly in.

22 mins: Coming up to halfway through the first 45 and this is going to be a massive test for Germany. Argentina are controlling the tempo at the moment.

21 mins: Schneider is penalised for foot up on Sorin. A little harsh.

20 mins: Riquelme again tries a near-post corner which Sorin heads over. Argentina certainly have a plan there.

19 mins: Tevez slips a lovely ball into Sorin in the box but the left-back’s cross is turned behind for a corner by Mertesacker.

18 mins: Per Mertesacker swivels and blasts a right-foot shot over the bar after a free-kick drops to him on the edge of the area.

17 mins: Chance for Germany as Ballack meets Schneider’s cross with a powerful header but he directs it wide.

16 mins: Ballack loses the ball and Argentina have it back again. Gonzalez runs at the German defence who stop him in his tracks, legally says the ref although Argentina think otherwise.

15 mins: Tevez is asking plenty of questions of the German defence early on but they’re keeping him in check so far.

14 mins: Christoph Metzelder shows good strength to muscle Hernan Crespo off the ball. Argentina press again and Maxi Rodriguez has a shot charged down.

13 mins: Podolski looks bright early on and almost forces a cross into the box from the left byeline.

12 mins: Sorin finds space on the left but his cross is cleared. Argentina win back possession and keep the ball patiently. Whistles ring out from the crowd but it doesn’t bother the Pekerman’s side.

11 mins: Podolski pulls the trigger from just outside the box but Argentina block his effort.

10 mins: Ballack’s ball balloons up into the arms of Abbondanzieri.

9 mins: Argentina win a free-kick on the left. Riquelme curls one into the box but Jens Lehmann takes cleanly.

8 mins: Corner to Argentina. Riquelme goes near post and Schweinsteiger has to clear the bouncing ball from almost off his own line.

8 mins: Podolski curls it and Roberto Abbondanzieri needs two bites of the cherry to finally gather it in his grasp.

7 mins: Gabriel Heinze clatters into the back of Miroslav Klose to give Germany a free-kick 30 yards out.

6 mins: Michael Ballack picks up possession just outside the box but, unlike the Swedes, Argentina get to him quickly and he loses the ball.

5 mins: Another whistle, this time against Juan Pablo Sorin. The game is stop-start in the early stages.

4 mins: Bastian Schweinsteiger tries to play a one-two on the edge of the box but is crowded out.

3 mins: The first yellow card and it goes to Lukas Podolski for a late tackle. It’s been a bad-tempered start.

2 mins: Nice early dribble by Juan Riquelme who earns a free-kick after being fouled by Torsten Frings. The tension is palpable here and the referee delays the kick while he ticks off both sides for pushing.

1 min: Early free-kick for Argentina as Javier Macherano goes down theatrically.

1 min: Argentina get the game in play.

Pre-Match: Jose Pekerman makes three changes to the Argentina team which beat Mexico as the South Americans take on hosts Germany in front of a sold-out crowd of 72,000 fans in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. For what is a rematch of the 1986 and 1990 World Cup finals, Carlos Tevez surprisingly comes in for Javier Saviola in attack, with Fabricio Coloccini replacing Lionel Scaloni as right-back. Midfielder Luis Gonzalez also returns from injury at the expense of Esteban Cambiasso. Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann sticks to the winning formation which impressively saw off Sweden, with Chelsea star Michael Ballack again pulling the strings in midfield. Kick-off is at 1600 BST.

Jellyfish CPA VS Google CPC

26 June 2006 Leave a comment
"Jellyfish is a new kind of search engine. We call it the Internet’s first buying engine. Search engines are great for finding information, but we think you also need a search engine that is perfect for when you want to buy something online.

You use Jellyfish.com just like you would any other shopping search engine to find the right product at the best price. But when you actually buy something from a store in our engine, we share at least half of what we earn by connecting you to that store. All you need to do is sign up for an account to earn cash back. There are no fees or hidden charges." — www.jellyfish.com

Jellyfish has over 1,000 advertisers signed up so far, with over 5 million listed products.

Users can collect their cash once products can no longer be returned, in order to prevent abuse of the system.

So it’s really interesting model when you want to buy something just go to Jellyfish and search for the thing you want. You should get anything in lowest price. (The result is that Jellyfish users can get products for less because half the marketing dollars spent by advertisers go directly their customers instead of to a third party.)

EBay’s recent move into CPA advertising with its AdContext system should make CPA ads more popular, luring publishers with the prospect of collecting a cut from auction sales made as a result of an ad.

So what’s about Google’s CPC model, for advertisers buying those clicks have no choice but to gamble. Fortunately for Google’s stock holder, Google recently acknowledged that it’s testing cost-per-action ads (CPA).

Germany Into Quarters

24 June 2006 Leave a comment
Germany became the first team into the quarter-finals of the 2006 FIFA World Cup as two early Lukas Podolski goals secured a comfortable 2-0 win against Sweden in Munich.

Final – Allianz Arena, Munich Attendance: 66,000
Germany 2 – 0 Sweden
Lukas Podolski (4)
Lukas Podolski (12)
  Henrik Larsson (pen miss 53)
Game 49

FT: For the 15th time Germany are ion the last eight of the World Cup after totally outplaying a disappointing Sweden. Germany were impressive, particularly in the first half, with Ballack outstanding in midfield. But for keeper Isaksson the scoreline would have been far worse for Sweden whose last hopes of getting back into the game disppeared when Larsson smashed a penalty high over the bar. Germany are now likely to face Argentina in the quarter-final, and what a prospect that is.

90 mins: Schneider tries to set Neuville away, but Hansson intercepts. Less than a minute to go now, and Germany will be the first team into the quarter-finals.

90 mins: We’ve already played one of the three minutes to be added at the end of this one-sided contest.

90 mins: The free-kick comes to nothing despite Wilhelmsson’s attempts to make something of Linderoth’s pass. Borowski hacks clear towards Klose, but Isaksson is out of his area to clear.

90 mins: Ljungberg wins a free-kick in the centre-circle.

89 mins: Taken quickly to Linderoth who looks long for Larsson, but overhits it and Lehmann gathers.

89 mins: Allback is fouled by Friedrich on the right.

88 mins: Schneider squares to Neuville who tees up Kehl, but he blazes over the bar.

87 mins: Lahm’s shot is blocked into Neuville’s path. His first-time shot on the turn is beaten away again by Isaksson, who is probably the only Swede to emerge in credit from this game.

86 mins: Germany are just keeping the ball in midfield now, content to pass the ball around and run down the clock.

85 mins: The corner is headed clear by Hansson.

85 mins: Sebastian Kehl replaces Frings for Germany.

84 mins: Schneider’s shot deflects off Linderoth, hits the post and Germany have a corner.

83 mins: It’s been a much more subdued second half but, apart from the penalty that Larsson missed so spectacularly, Germany have rarely been troubled by a Swedish side who seem to have used up all they had in that second half against England.

82 mins: Good run from Klose across the face of the area, but Edman makes a good challenge to halt the German’s march.

81 mins: Ballack deserves a goal, but he is denied once more by Isaksson who parries his shot and Klose heads the rebound over the bar.

80 mins: Frings is fouled by Allback on halfway.

79 mins: Ballack is once again given time to measure a shot, but Linderoth gets the block, and Mellberg clears as the ball spins across the face of goal.

78 mins: Borowski’s cross is too high for Ballack, but it’s a walk in the park for Germany now.

77 mins: Friedrich is caught late by Allback, who gets a booking. Allback protests his innocence, but he was definitely late, although the German certainly made a meal of it.

76 mins: It takes an age for Borowski to get treatment, then he is stretchered off to the side of the pitch, when it would have been far quicker to get him off behind the goal, and eventually after a lot of messing around the game can continue.

75 mins: Lahm’s cross is helped on by Neuville to Borowski, but Hansson makes a good block. Borowski stays down and eventually Sweden put the ball out of play.

74 mins: Another change for Germany, and it’s two-goal hero Podolski who goes off to a huge ovation, to be replaced by Oliver Neuville.

73 mins: The referee gives a foul throw again Friedrich for advancing 10 yards before taking it.

72 mins: Both teams make a change. Tim Borowski replaces Schweinsteiger for Germany, while Allback replaces the disappointing Ibrahimovic for Sweden.

72 mins: Ballack shoots again under no pressure 30 yards out, but it flashes just wide.

71 mins: Sweden enjoy a rare spell of possession, but it doesn’t get them anywhere, and eventually Schneider gets the ball back for Germany.

70 mins: Decent move from Sweden, but Ljungberg shoots wide from Larsson’s pass.

69 mins: Linderoth’s corner is headed away by Mertesacker.

68 mins: Sweden take the free-kick quickly, and Ibrahimovic eventually wins a corner off Metzelder from Larsson’s deep cross.

68 mins: Ljungberg is fouled on halfway by Schneider.

67 mins: Good defending from Mellberg, sliding in to deny Klose a shooting chance.

66 mins: Friedrich is the latest German to have a pop on goal from distance, but his effort is way off target.

65 mins: Wilhelmsson thinks he’s in on goal, but Larsson was flagged offside as he flicks the ball on.

64 mins: Linderoth is okay, but can’t get his pass intended for Wilhelmsson past Lahm.

63 mins: Germany play on with Linderoth down injured, and Podolski eventually shoots wide to hoots of derision from the Swedish fans.

62 mins: Larsson tries to get the ball through to Ibrahimovic, but it goes straight through to Lehmann.

61 mins: The Swedish free-kick comes to nothing and Podolski bursts clear. He finds Klose on the right and continues his run. But Klose’s cross is just too far ahead of Podolski and out for a goal-kick.

60 mins: Linderoth wins a free-kick in midfield after getting kicked by Schweinsteiger.

59 mins: Germany soon have the ball back and a patient passing move ends with Ballack shooting over from 25 yards. Again, the German midfielders are allowed far too much space in the middle of the park.

58 mins: Podolski’s raking pass is too strong for Schweinsteiger on the left, and it’s a Sweden throw.

57 mins: Ljungberg drives down the left, but Friedrich holds him off and Lehmann gathers.

56 mins: Klose squares to Podolski and looks for a return ball, but Podolski slightly greedily goes for goal and clears the crossbar by some distance.

55 mins: Great strength and skill from Ballack to hold off two challenges and unleash a powerful right-foot shot that Isaksson somehow diverts onto the post and away to safety.

55 mins: Linderoth looks long for Larsson, but the ball is too close to Lehmann who gathers.

54 mins: Klose tries to play in Podolski on the left, but Alexandersson is there to snuff out the threat.

53 mins: It just isn’t Sweden’s day as the normally ice-cool Larsson blazes the penalty high over the bar. Sweden bizarrely made a change before the spot-kick, bringing on Wilhelmsson for Jonson, and that may have put Larsson off. Whatever the reason, it was a dreadful penalty.

52 mins: Amazingly, Sweden have a penalty and a chance to get back in the game. Much better play from Ibrahimovic this time, showing some strength on the left. His low cross finds Larsson who is tripped by Metzelder.

51 mins: Linderoth tries to hit the ball over the top for Ibrahimovic, but he can’t even be bothered to challenge Metzelder for the ball, and the attack breaks down all too easily.

50 mins: Schneider is in acres of space on the right, where Frings picks him out, but Hansson manages to clear the cross.

49 mins: Schneider tries to release Podolski, but Hansson is across to clear.

48 mins: Jonson clatters into Ballack, and earns a richly-deserved booking. Amazingly Sweden are unhappy with the decision, but they really have no grounds for complaint there.

48 mins: Ballack trips Ljungberg in midfield, and is perhaps lucky to avoid a caution considering what Lucic was dismissed for.

47 mins: Great reverse pass from Ljungberg plays Mattias Jonson in, but Lehmann comes out bravely to gather.

46 mins: Germany get the second half underway, with one foot already in the last eight.

HT: That’s the last action of a half Germany have absolutely dominated. They have had the run of midfield, with Ballack, Schneider and Schweinsteiger pulling the strings while Klose and Podolski look a great pairing upfront. Podolski got the goals, but both were made by Klose who loves World Cups it seems. Sweden have been atrocious though, and their defensive horror show was summed up when Lucic was sent off for a second booking, although he could certainly consider himself unfortunate for the second of the two yellows. Only goalkeeper Isaksson with a string of world-class saves has kept Sweden from being on the wrong end of a cricket score in Munich.

45 mins: Larsson’s free-kick is met by Mellberg, but Ballack is there to block.

45 mins: Ibrahimovic draws a foul from Metzelder, and Sweden may have a chance to get a foothold in the game right on the stroke of half time.

45 mins: Good defending from Mellberg, holding off Klose and winning a goal-kick.

45 mins: There will be two additional minutes at the end of this first half.

45 mins: Ibrahimovic heads the corner clear. The ball is helped back into the area by Friedrich. Podolski brings it down beautifully, but he’d strayed just offside.

44 mins: Another great break from Germany. Schweinsteiger tees up Podolski who is tackled by Mellberg. But the ball breaks to Klose whose shot is beaten away by Isaksson, who has kept the score down to respectable levels in this opening 45 minutes.

43 mins: Lehmann again almost lets Sweden back into the game, making a complete hash of Larsson’s cross before being bailed out by Metzelder.

42 mins: Ljungberg is fouled by Schneider in midfield.

41 mins: This time Linderoth’s corner is headed clear. The ball comes back in to Ibrahimovic who erroneously believes Linderoth to still be out on the right after taking the corner, and passes straight out of play.

40 mins: Linderoth’s corner is deflected over by a German defender after sub Hansson won the header.

40 mins: Against the odds, Sweden are almost back in the game as Ibrahimovic holds off Metzelder, swivels and shoots at Lehmann’s near post, and the Arsenal keeper is almost embarrassed, just managing to smuggle the ball round the post.

39 mins: Petter Hansson comes on for Kallstrom. Hansson is a defender, so he will go into the back four allowing Linderoth to move back into the midfield.

38 mins: Good move again from Germany, but it ends with a disappointing overhit cross from Lahm for a goal-kick.

37 mins: Germany were passing the ball through Sweden’s midfield with indecent ease before. Now they’re only up against 10 men it’s got even easier.

36 mins: Linderoth has dropped back from midfield to play alongside Olof Mellberg at the back for Sweden.

35 mins: Sweden’s nightmare gets worse as Klose spins round Lucic and is pulled back by the defender. That earns Lucic a very harsh second yellow card and, as Graham Poll isn’t the ref today, that means red for Lucic, and Sweden are down to 10 men as well as being 2-0 down.

34 mins: Several of the German fans thought they’d gone 3-0 up when Schweinsteiger’s shot hit the post behind the goal and runs along the back of the goal. It was actually another great save from Isaksson to divert it round the post, but a goal-kick is given.

33 mins: Frings has time and space to measure a shot from 25 yards, and Isaksson makes a great save, tipping a swerving shot over the bar.

33 mins: Some confusion in the German penalty area, and Sweden appeal for handball against Metzelder to no avail.

32 mins: The corner is cut back to Frings who shoots over the bar.

31 mins: Great run from Lahm on the left, beating Larsson before pulling the ball back for Klose. His shot is sneaking inside the near post before Isaksson gets down at the last moment to make a good save and keep the Swedes just about in this game.

31 mins: Germany work the ball nicely out to Friedrich on the right, but his cross is cleared by Linderoth.

30 mins: Erik Edman fouls Podolski, who stays down for a while clutching his ankle. Worrying moments for Germany, but Podolski is back on his feet soon enough.

29 mins: Klose is penalised for backing into Lucic as Friedrich launches the ball forward.

28 mins: Ibrahimovic dwells on the ball and Schweinsteiger nicks the ball away. He sets Klose away and Lucic picks up a booking for a foul on the in-form striker.

27 mins: Klose tries to chest Lehmann’s clearance into the path of Podolski, but Lucic intercepts and brings the ball out.

26 mins: Wonderful pass from Frings finds Schweinsteiger on the left, but good Swedish defence forces him to play back to Lahm, and the move peters out, ending with a very optimistic shot from Ballack that goes well wide of the target.

25 mins: Schweinsteiger tries to dink the ball into Klose’s path, but Tobias Linderoth makes the block.

24 mins: Kallstrom links up with Ibrahimovic on the right, but puts his cross behind for a goal-kick. Lehmann takes about a week over the goal-kick, which doesn’t go down well with the Brazilian referee.

23 mins: Germany are so dominant here it’s almost embarrassing, keeping the ball with ease in midfield. The ball eventually comes to Schneider on the right, and he comes inside and fires a swerving shot just wide.

22 mins: Decent ball in, but a flapping Lehmann just about gets enough on it to claw it away from danger.

21 mins: Larsson almost gets a half-chance, but Metzelder is on him into a flash to make the challenge at the expense of a corner.

21 mins: Klose almost release Schneider with a deft one-two, but Teddy Lucic gets a foot in.

20 mins: Niclas Alexandersson tries to play long to Ibrahimovic, but he can’t bring the ball down and Germany clear.

19 mins: Another chance for Germany – again falling to Podolski, but he makes no contact with his attempted header from Lahm’s cross.

18 mins: The ball comes back into the box and slack marking allows Klose to get on the end of it, but he can’t keep his header down.

18 mins: Ballack again finds embarrassing space in the midfield and strides forward before unleashing a shot that Isaksson does well to beat away.

17 mins: The throw finds Ibrahimovic on the edge of the box, but he can’t turn Metzelder, and Germany clear. Edman then fouls Friedrich.

17 mins: Lehmann slices an attempted clearance for a Sweden throw.

16 mins: Podolski tries to return the favour to Klose, but overhits his cross from the left, and Sweden can smuggle the ball clear, but they look all over the place at the back.

15 mins: Ballack is caught in possession and Kallstrom’s ball almost plays in Ljungberg, but he can’t control and Jens Lehmann gathers.

14 mins: Edman takes the free-kick, clearing everyone and out for a German throw.

14 mins: Ljungberg wins a free-kick on the left for Sweden, who face a huge task to drag themselves back into the game.

13 mins: GOAL PODOLSKI – the hosts are in dreamland now, and Podolski has both goals. Great work from Klose, running across the edge of the area and then reversing a pass into Podolski’s path, leaving the Swedish defence open, and Podolski coolly slots the ball past Isaksson. Great move, great goal, and the Germans are absolutely flying.

12 mins: Good cross from the left by Ljungberg, but Ibrahimovic tries to play it with his foot when he should surely have gone with the head and is penalised for high feet.

11 mins: The free-kick finds Schweinsteiger at the back of the area. He finds Philipp Lahm sho squares to Ballack. The Chelsea midfielder is given time to measure a shot but sends it narrowly wide.

10 mins: Ljungberg fouls Klose tight to the touchline on the right.

9 mins: Schweinsteiger switches to the right, but is denied by Edman’s challenge. Great start from Germany though, not allowing Sweden to bring the ball clear.

8 mins: Chance for Henrik Larsson to pull Sweden level, spinning away from his defender but snatching at his shot from the left and dragging it into the side-netting under pressure from Ballack, who has covered every blade of grass on the pitch in these opening minutes.

7 mins: Podolski is full of confidence now, smashing a shot narrowly over the bar from fully 30 yards after being found by Ballack. He could have picked out Bastian Schweinsteiger on the left, but hads the confidence to go for goal, and wasn’t far away.

6 mins: Arne Friedrich gets back well to halt Ljungberg’s marauding run down the left.

5 mins: Dream start for the hosts, but it was all about a great ball from Ballack, and a wonderful first touch from Klose to take him clear of the Swedish defence.

4 mins: GOAL PODOLSKI – Germany have the lead inside four minutes as Sweden are caught napping at the back after Michael Ballack’s neat pass plays in Klose. He is denied by the keeper, but the ball comes out to Lukas Podolski who coolly slots home to ease the nerves of the hosts.

4 mins: The free-kick is overhit and easily claimed by Andreas Isaksson.

3 mins: Miroslav Klose is fouled in midfield by Kim Kallstrom.

2 mins: Former Spurs full-back Erik Edman swings in the free-kick, but Per Mertesacker heads clear impressively under pressure from Ibrahimovic.

1 mins: Freddie Ljungberg wins the first free-kick of the game after being pulled down by Bernd Schneider.

1 mins: Sweden get the first of the last-16 clashes underway.

Pre-Match: Germany coach Jurgen Klinsmann recalls Christoph Metzhelder to theheart6 of the defence at the expense of Chelsea’s Robert Huth for their second-round clash with Sweden. The hosts have history on their side, having not lost at this stage of the competition in 68 years.

Sweden also make just one change to the team which drew their final group match against England, Zlatan Ibrahimovic recovering sufficiently from a groin injury to take the place of Marcus Allback up front. But that means winger Christian Wilhelmsson must settle for a place on the bench.

Germany Stroll To Win

20 June 2006 Leave a comment
Germany cruised to a 3-0 lead as they battled Ecuador for Group A Supremacy in Berlin.

Final – Olympiastadion, Berlin Attendance: 72,000
Ecuador 0 – 3 Germany
  Miroslav Klose (4)
Miroslav Klose (44)
Lukas Podolski (57)
Game 33

FT: The final whistle blows, and Germany cruise through with three wins out of three. Don’t read too much into this result though; Ecuador were happy to have secuerd their last-16 spot with a game to spare, and played a second-string side here. The game became little more than a training exercise, albeit a highly positive one for Germany. Ballack effortlessly controlled the game from midfield, easing himself nicely back into the flow after injury, while Klose and Podolski were lively upfront against dozing Ecuador defenders. Podolski’s goal in particular will be a real boost to the Germans after he missed a few chances. Ecuador put all their effort into the first two games, and after two cracking victories over Poland and Costa Rica, this was a very subdued showing. They’ll hiope to regain that early form in the second round, whoever they meet.

90 mins: Kaviedes goes down under Asamoah’s challenge, but the ref isn’t interested and Germany bring the ball clear.

90 mins: De la Cruz crosses from the right, and Lehmann gathers comfortably.

90 mins: Kaviedes’ strike deflects wide for a corner.

90 mins: Ambrossi is fouled on the edge of the box by Huth, and Ecuador have the chane of a late goal.

89 mins: Lahm crosses to the back post where Asamoah is lurking, but he’s penalised for a foul on Guagua.

88 mins: Friedrich holds off the pint-sized Lara and it’s a Germany goal-kick.

87 mins: Lahm tees up Ballack who smashes a powerful shot that Mora does well to gather at the second attempt. Great strike from Ballack – a yard either side and it was number four.

86 mins: More cosy midfield possession for Germany, and the home fans are in party mood.

85 mins: More terrible defending from De la Cruz, letting the ball bounce in his own area and seeing Schweinsteiger nip in and take the ball away. His shot is a decent one, but Mora beats it away two-handed.

84 mins: Guagua gives the ball away in midfield and then concedes a free-kick for a foul on Borowski.

83 mins: Mendez takes the free-kick. His cross deflects off the two-man wall and is cleared to safety.

82 mins: Lara is chopped down by Friedrich to earn a free-kick on the left for Ecuador.

81 mins: Another good, quick German break from an Ecuador corner, but Neuville can’t quite find Podolski and Mora gathers.

80 mins: Raking pass from the right by Tenorio is headed behind for a corner by Friedrich. Ecuador are in no hurry to take it.

79 mins: Now it’s Germany passing the ball contentedly around in midfield, and both teams appear happy to let the game wind down to its inevitable conclusion.

78 mins: Ecuador keep the ball nicely in midfield, but Germany seem content for the SOuth Americans to have the ball in non-threatening areas.

77 mins: Asamoah does well on the right and squares the ball to Ballack, but his shot from distance is always rising over the bar.

77 mins: Schweinsteiger shoots straight at Mora when well-placed.

76 mins: A German break is halted by Espinoza blocking Podolski and conceding a free-kick.

75 mins: Mendez whips the free-kick into the box from the left, but it’s easy for Lehmann.

75 mins: After a few fouls in his brief time on the pitch, Borowski has foolishly earned a caution.

74 mins: Friedrich concedes a throw as Ecuador half-heartedly press forward in search of a consolation goal.

73 mins: Borowski dispossesses Benitez in midfield.

72 mins: All six substitutions made now, with the hard-working Schneider replaced by Gerald Asamoah.

71 mins: Good effort from Mendez, bending up andover the wall, but not getting enough dip to get the ball under the bar. It flicked the roof of the net with Lehmann rooted to the spot.

70 mins: Benitez wins a free-kick within shooting range for Ecuador after being caught by the long legs of Borowski.

69 mins: Patricio Urrutia is on for Ecuador, replaceing Ayovi.

68 mins: If it’s possible for a player to be like a miniature Aaron Lennon, then that’s what Lara is. He skips past Lahm, but can’t catch up with the ball and Germany have a goal-kick.

67 mins: Double change for the Germans. Oliver Neuville and Tim Borowski – who is a clear foot taller than Lara – are on, with Frings and the impressive Klose making way.

66 mins: Lara has made a bit of an impression here, shooting just wide from 25 yards out.

65 mins: Good work from Klose, and his cross from the right deserved better than Ballack standing and watching it go by. No-one gambled on going to the near post and Ecuador clear.

65 mins: Mendez cross is too long for Kaviedes and Lehmann gathers.

64 mins: Lara tries a jinking run but trips over the ball. At least it was an Ecuador player showing some ambition.

63 mins: Christian Lara replaces Valencia. Lara is the smallest player at the World Cup, fact fans. Yes, smaller even than little Aaron Lennon.

62 mins: Friedrich tees up Ballack who shoots wide from distance.

61 mins: Klose gives away a free-kick in midfield, but it shows good commitment from the striker.

60 mins: Ecuador enjoy a period of possession in midfield, but show little inclination to get the bal forward.

59 mins: Almost two in two minutes for Podolski as Klose bursts free and cuts the ball back. Podolski didn’t get enough on the shot though, and Mora makes a comfortable save.

58 mins: Germany have done what was required today, but they mustn’t get carried away with a routine victory over opponents who clearly have one eye on their next game.

57 mins: GOAL PODOLSKI – Germany break quickly from the Ecuador corner. The ball comes to Schneider on the right and his low cross is perefct for Podolski, who couldn’t miss from close range. It’s the goal all of Germany has been waiting for, and it was a wonderful incisive break from the hosts.

56 mins: Another decent shot on goal from Ecuador, this time Mendez forcing Lehmann to tip over. Almost identical to Tenorio’s effort, and in truth Lehmann was hardly troubled.

56 mins: Ambrossi finds a good position on the left, but his slip means he can’t keep possession.

55 mins: Cheers from the crowd as the stadium announcer reveals that the game is a sell-out. Who’d have thought it?

54 mins: Glorious chance for the out-of-sorts Podolski to break his duck. Guagua pulled out of a challenge setting Lahm free. He pulls the ball back for Podolski who shoots wide with the goal at his mercy.

53 mins: Frings whips the ball into the box but straight at Mora.

52 mins: Another free-kick for Germany as Ayovi trips Schweinsteiger.

51 mins: Late lunge on Ballack by Valencia earns a deserved yellow card. Fortunately Ballack jumped the worst of the challenge or that could have ended in serious injury. THe studs were showing and Valencia could easily have seen red for that one.

51 mins: Espinoza is through on goal after staying forward from the corner, but he used an arm to control the ball, and Germany have a free-kick.

50 mins: Espinoza gets a good flick-on but Benitez is on his heels and can’t capitalise.

50 mins: Germany get the corner clear, but Ambrossi forces another flag-kick on the left.

49 mins: Edwin Tenorio tries his luck from distance, and Lehmann is forced to tip over the bar.

48 mins: Lahm’s long ball down the left is shepherded back to the keeper by De la Cruz. There are signs early in this half that Ecuador are just slightly more committed now, presumably keen to avoid a hiding from the hosts.

47 mins: Friedrich overlaps on the right but his cross is disappointing, flying straight out for a goal-kick.

46 mins: Early chance for Podolski, but the ball just won’t fall for him and he is eventually crowded out by Ecuador defenders.

46 mins: Germany get the second half underway knowing that they are heading for the top of the group with a 100 per cent record. Ecuador make one change at half time, bringing on Cristian Benitez for Borja.

HT: Ecuador 0 Germany 2

HT: Everything’s going very nicely for Germany at the interval, but in truth this has the feel of a training game. A much-changed Ecuador side haev shown none of the verve that earned them cracking victories over Poland and Costa Rica, and we’ll learn nothing about either of England’s possible second-round opponents from this mismatch.

45 mins: Schneider fouls Ambrossi as he tries to get round the defender.

45 mins: There will be two minutes of added time at the end of the first half. It looks like being something of a walkover for Germany against an Ecuador side who appear happy just to have made the last 16.

44 mins: Klose scored five goals in the 2002 World Cup, all with his head. He’s got four in 2006 now, and they’ve all come with his feet.

43 mins: GOAL KLOSE – Best bit of football in a dreary game as Ballack dinks the ball delightfully over the centre-backs and Klose coolly rounds Mora and slots home into an empty net. Klose’s out on his own in the race for the Golden Boot now with four goals.

42 mins: Kaviedes’ cross deflects off Huth, and Lehmann comes out well to claim, showing no ill-effects from that injury that so troubled him two minutes ago.

42 mins: Lehmann seems to be OK now after receiving some attention from the physio.

40 mins: Worryingly for Germany, Lehmann seems to have picked up a knock on the hip that will require some treatment. He clashed with Kaviedes, and as usual, Lehmann is narky about any opposing player invading his personal space.

39 mins: Podolski finds Schweinsteiger on the left, but his cross is poor and easily headed clear by Guagua.

38 mins: Ambrossi is penalised for a physical challenge on Schneider in midfield.

37 mins: Borja dummies Valencia’s pass nicely, catching out Arne Friedrich, but Kaviedes shoots over the bar from a tight angle.

36 mins: Ballack crosses from the left, but the ball is intercepted before it reaches Klose. Germany look laboured going forward and are struggling to break down an uninterested, second-string Ecuador back line.

35 mins: Ballack helps the ball towards the area, but Ecuador deal with it easily.

34 mins: Guagua fouls Ballack in an aerila challenge in midfield, and is perhaps lucky to escape a booking after leading with the arm.

34 mins: More sloppy defending from Ecuador as Per Mertesacker’s lofted pass is allowed to fall to Klose, but his first-time volley is off target.

33 mins: Schweinsteiger’s free-kick is headed clear for a Germany throw.

32 mins: De la Cruz brings down a marauding Lahm, but it’s very harsh on the Ecuador defender who simply muscled the German out. Strange that a team coached by Jurgen Klinsmann is so full of players happy to hit the deck at the slightest provocation.

31 mins: Schneider’s cross is half-cleared by Guagua, but Klose has to stretch for the shot and slices well wide of the target.

30 mins: Ballack sets Podolski free, but Mora comes out of his area quickly to clear. The ball comes back to Ballack but he can’t find the empty net from just past halfway, and Ecuador have the goal-kick.

29 mins: Schneider crosses low from the right, and Podolski tries to lay the ball into Klose’s path but is flagged offside.

28 mins: Schweinsteiger overhits the delivery and it goes straight out of play. The whistle had already gone in any case for a foul by Huth.

27 mins: Schweinsteiger wins a cheap free-kick on the left from a nothing challenge by Guagua.

26 mins: Ecuador look for a long ball to Felix Borja, but it’s overhit and out for a goal-kick.

25 mins: Bernd Schneider lifts the ball into Klose’s path, but at full stretch he can’t divert the ball wide of the keeper who gatheres gratefully.

24 mins: Edwin Tenorio is pulled up for a foul on Klose.

23 mins: Paul Ambrossi almost gets on the end of Valencia’ pass down the left, but the ball just goes out of play for a goal-kick.

22 mins: Podolski thinks he’s in again, but belatedly the linesman flags him offside from Klose’s ball. Right decision in the end.

21 mins: Kaviedes is down injured after an accidental kick in the head from Schweinsteiger.

20 mins: Podolski is almost set free by Lahm’s long ball over the top, but the striker is flagged offside.

19 mins: Another escape for Ecuador, who look dozy at the back. Villa fans won’t be surprised to hear that De la Cruz is probably the worst offender.

18 mins: Frings brings the ball forward again for Germany before finding Frings on the left. De la Cruz watches Lahm go and his cross finds Ballack who volleys over the bar from 16 yards.

17 mins: Edwin Tenorio is fouled, but Ecuador take the free-kick too quickly and Edison Mendez wastes a good opportunity by shooting well wide.

16 mins: Ballack looks long for Klose but Guagua heads clear.

15 mins: De la Cruz breaks down the right and gets the better of Lahm, but his cross is too high for Kaviedes.

14 mins: Klose tries to get on the end of Philipp Lahm’s teasing cross but Espinoza does enough to hold him off.

14 mins: And they do, as Mora punches clear and Edwin Tenorio wins a free-kick.

13 mins: Jorge Guagua can’t prevent a German corner on the left. Ecuador will need to defend this one better than the last.

12 mins: Schweinsteiger tries a one-two with Klose, but the return pass is wayward and Ecuador have possession.

11 mins: Frings breaks up an Ecuador attack with a good challenge on Kaviedes. Frings does a fine job for Germany, breaking up play and starting attacks for his side.

10 mins: Frings is fouled by Edwin Tenorio in midfield.

9 mins: Ballack tries to spring Podolski, but his pass is overhit and gathered by Christian Mora.

8 mins: Ecuador try to rebuild after concedingtheir first goal of the tournament with some patient passing at the back.

7 mins: Ballack takes, but his shot is blocked by an Ecuador wall that was nowhere near 10 yards back.

6 mins: Ballack wins a free-kick in a better position, and Germany can go for goal from this one, 25 yards out and just left of centre.

5 mins: Schweinsteiger is fouled by Marlon Ayovi.

4 mins: GOAL KLOSE – woeful defending from Ecuador. Schweinsteiger’s corner is too long, but Frings helps the ball back into the box. Again Ecuador fail to clear – Ulises De la Cruz the man responsible, and Schweinsteiger’s cutback is rifled into the botrtom corner from close range by Klose for his third goal of the tournament.

4 mins: Klose pressures Espinoza into conceding a corner.

3 mins: Geovanny Espinoza gets across to make a clearance as Torsten Frings looks to get on the end of Bastian Schweinsteiger’s pass.

2 mins: Germany go long towards Miroslav Klose, but he can’t bring the ball under control.

1 mins: Good start for Ecuador as Luis Valencia skips down the right and almost finds Ivan Kaviedes with his cross, but Jens Lehmann gathers.

1 mins: Ecuador get the game started.

Pre-Match: Chelsea’s new signing Michael Ballack keeps his place in Germany’s starting line-up for the final Group A match against joint leaders Ecuador. A potential yellow-card ban could not keep Jurgen Klinsmann from fielding his talismanic skipper, even though the losers of today’s clash could be in for a second-round meeting with England. Future Middlesbrough defender Robert Huth gets his World Cup debut at the expense of centre-back Christoph Metzelder, while striker Lukas Podolski remains in the starting XI despite a recent drop in form.

With Ecuador already through to the knockout stages, coach Luis Fernando Suarez rests several players, making five changes from the 3-0 victory over Costa Rica. In-form striker Carlos Tenario and former Southampton forward Agustin Delgado, who have scored four of Ecuadorดs five goals, find themselves on the bench, with Aston Villaดs Ulises de la Cruz starting in central defence.

How To Dare With Cockroach?

19 June 2006 2 comments

1 min: There’s a magnificent atmosphere in the stadium as Poland get the game under way.

Pre-match: Michael Ballack celebrates a long-awaitedcomeback from a nagging calf injury as Germany prepare to take onstruggling Poland in Dortmund. Chelsea’s recent signing had been restedin the opening 4-2 victory over Costa Rica in Group A but now returnsto central midfield at the expense of Werder Bremenดs Tim Borowski. Itspells the only change in Jurgen Klinsmannดs starting XI, without-of-form defender Arne Friedrich granted another chance to provehimself at right-back. Poland boss Pawel Janas, under fire following adismal performance in last Fridayดs 2-0 loss to Ecuador, keepsinfluential midfielder Miroslav Szymkowiak on the bench, startingIreneusz Jelen instead. Bartosz Bosacki also replaces Mariusz Jop indefence. History clearly favours the tournament hosts who have neitherlost to Poland (10 wins, four draws), nor lost an international infront of a Dortmund crowd (12 wins, one draw).

Game 1

90+4 mins: The final whistle sounds and hosts Germany are off to a dream start having beaten a gutsy Costa Rica 4-2 in this thrilling opening match of this World Cup. Although two goals from Wanchope made them work for the points, Klose’s brace and two fantastic strikes from Lahm and Frings sealed the victory.

90+3 mins: Costa Rica win a late corner but if they make anything from this it will be mere consolation.

90+2 mins: Germany continue to attack now the pressure has finally been lifted but this time Friedrich’s shot from distance flies well over the bar.

90+1 mins: There will be three minutes to be added on at the end of this pulsating tie. There could yet be more goals in this one.

90 mins: Costa Rica also make a change with Ronald Gomez coming off to be replaced by Randall Azofeifa.

89 mins: Germany make a substitution with Schneider coming off for young striker David Odonkor, who only made his international debut in the recent friendly with Japan.

88 mins: This opening match is truly remarkable with so many goals of the highest order. We started with a blinder from Lahm, but this one was even better.

87 mins: GOAL FRINGS – After the free-kick is taken short by Schweinsteiger, Frings blasts a fierce, swirling shot from around 30-yards which bends into the top corner of the net.

86 mins: Germany win a free-kick on the left wing after Umana fouls Neuville and this could produce a chance to kill the game once and for all.

85 mins: Germany keep pressing and a shot by Podolski from left channel is blocked by Fonseca.

84 mins: Arne Friedrich takes the free-kick short as Germany look to hold onto possession and run the clock down.

83 mins: Germany win a free-kick after a foul by Leonardo Gonzalez on Schweinsteiger.

82 mins: Costa Rica have just eight minutes to get forward and cause a huge shock but the Germans, apart from just two moments, are looking rather solid.

81 mins: Germany win a free-kick on the right after Neuville is brought down by Marin but it comes to nothing.

80 mins: Mertesacker receives the ball once again down the left channel of the area but his cross is too hard and Costa Rica survive.

79 mins: The corner is curled into the area by Schweinsteiger and Mertesacker rises high to plant a header on target but Porras makes an important diving save.

78 mins: Before it can be taken Germany make a substitution with Klose coming off for Oliver Neuville.

77 mins: Podolski tries his luck from distance but the ball takes a deflection and goes wide for a corner.

76 mins: Costa Rica make another change with Mauricio Solis making way for Cristian Bolanos.

75 mins: There is a certain amount of anxiety in the stands as the home side, who were completely dominant, are just one goal away from dropping two ‘certain’ points.

74 mins: Oliver Kahn has a wry smile as he sits on the touchline wondering if he will get a chance to reclaim the Germany number one spot as Lehmann has now conceded two goals from two shots.

73 mins: The Germans were cruising but yet another lack of concentration has put this result in jeopardy.

73 mins: GOAL WANCHOPE – Out of the blue Costa Rica open up the German defence and a beautiful chip from Centano into the area puts Wanchope in the clear and the striker pokes the ball past Lehmann.

72 mins: Kehl will sit in midfield as Klinsmann now aims to shut up shop.

71 mins: The hosts make a change with the impressive Borowski coming off to be replaced by Sebastian Kehl.

70 mins: Germany are in the comfort zone at the moment and now the match has a training ground feel to it.

69 mins: It’s far too easy for the hosts and Lahm now has a chance to score his second of the game as he bursts into the area from the left wing, but his shot is weak and Porras makes the save.

68 mins: Costa Rica win a corner down the right but Centeno’s cross into the area is poor and Borowski is able to head the danger away.

67 mins: Ballack looks on from the touchline and can hardly have few complaints now with his manager’s decision to rest him.

66 mins: Costa Rica make a substitution with Jervis Drummond coming on to replace the injured Gilberto Martinez.

65 mins: Germany continue to link up well with a series of consecutive passes but this time Costa Rica are able to clear the danger.

64 mins: Costa Rica seem short of ideas and a long ball forward for Wanchope runs into Lehmann’s arms.

63 mins: Klose was 20/1 to win the Golden Boot before the World Cup started and that now seems a huge price for the tournament specialist.

62 mins: Costa Rica now look well beaten as Germany look very confident in possession.

61 mins: GOAL KLOSE – After some precise build-up play, Lahm is put clear down the left wing and an inch-perfect cross finds an unmarked Klose who manages to fire the ball into the net after his initial header is saved.

59 mins: Germany have slowed the pace down somewhat as they continue to knock the ball about but they still look like they could score another goal.

58 mins: An a fine long ball down the wing from Schweinsteiger finds Podolski down the left but the cross into the area lands in Porras’ arms.

57 mins: The Germans switch play from right to left but Fonseca lands an excellent challenge on Lahm down the wing.

56 mins: This game still remains very open with both sides looking for more goals.

55 mins: Costa Rica win a free-kick around 30 yards from goal and Centeno bends the ball into the area but Fonseca is penalised after a push on Frings.

54 mins: Germany attack down the right and a deep searching cross into the area looks to find Per Mertesacker but Porras comes out to claim.

53 mins: Costa Rica are starting to look more dangerous going forward but the slack German defence are making it easier than it needs to be. Unless the hosts get another goal, a draw is certainly on the cards.

52 mins: Schweinsteiger takes it short to Frings on the left corner of the area and although he manages to chip a delicate cross into the area, Podolski’s header is weak and wide.

51 mins: Podolski’s delivery into the area is poor and Costa rica have no problems clearing the danger. Germany regain possession and manage to win another corner down the left.

50 mins: Borowski wins a corner down the left after his cross is deflected behind by Umana.

49 mins: Centeno floats the ball into the area and Danny Fonseca’s diving header just goes drifts wide of the post and Lehmann is angry with his sleeping defence.

48 mins: Costa Rica win a corner after some terrible defending by Lahm down the right. Walter Centeno will take it.

47 mins: The hosts continue their shoot on sight policy with Podolski this time letting fly from outside the area, but Porras watches it go over the bar.

46 mins: Germany get the second half of this clash underway hoping to build on their advantage. Costa Rica know they can take their chances but they must create more of them if they want to take something from this.

45+2 mins: The referee blows his whistle to bring an entertaining first half to a close and Germany lead Costa Rica 2-1 in this World Cup opening match.

45+1 mins: There will be just one minute of stoppage to play at the end of this first half.

45 mins: Germany keep pressing for another goal but their opponents are closing them down well in the final third.

44 mins: This time the delivery from Podolski causes more problems and a flick on finds Metzelder on the far post but his shot is wide of the mark.

43 mins: Borowski delivers the ball deep into the area and Luis Marin concedes another corner.

42 mins: Lahm probes down the left and wins a corner when his cross is deflected behind by Michael Umana.

41 mins: Podolski is the man who takes it but his curling shot over the wall fails to come down in time to dip under the bar.

40 mins: Moments later the hosts are awarded a free-kick after Douglas Sequeira’s foul on Schweinsteiger around 30 yards from goal.

39 mins: Germany have a shout for a penalty after Lahm’s powerful shot seems to hit the arm of a defender on the corner of the area – but nothing is given.

38 mins: Wanchope all of a sudden is put clean through on goal but his chip over the on-rushing Lehmann bounces wide of the post. It wouldn’t have counted anyway as the offside flag was harshly raised against the striker.

37 mins: It’s a bit too easy for Germany at the moment and now Arne Friedrich fancies his chances to score from long range… but the shot just keeps on rising.

36 mins: After the ball is chipped into the area the flag goes up against Fonseca and the opportunity is wasted.

35 mins: But the Central Americans now have a free-kick in a promising position around 30 yards from goal.

34 mins: Apart from the Costa Rica goal, Arsenal goalkeeper Lehmann has had absolutely nothing to do.

33 mins: Schneider dribbles down the right before playing a perfect reverse pass with the outside of his right foot down the line for Podolski…but the offside flag is raised even though the striker was on.

32 mins: The hosts continue to press down the left with Schweinsteiger but the attempted cross is hacked away.

31 mins: The resulting free-kick is lobbed into the area but the Costa Rican defence are able to clear their lines.

30 mins: Germany advance through the middle but Podolski is brought down by Danny Fonseca who subsequently gets booked.

29 mins: The lanky striker tries to weave his way down the left but after cutting inside onto his right foot, Christoph Metzelder closes him down.

28 mins: The first corner of the World Cup is easily cleared and now Costa Rica have a chance to break with Wanchope.

27 mins: Schweinsteiger bursts down the left and puts Podolski away but the young striker’s low cross back for Tim Borowski is put behind for a corner.

26 mins: So far they have looked shaky on the occasions they have had to defend but generally they are in full control.

25 mins: Germany have only lost once in their last six international games but they were criticised for the poor quality goals they conceded in the recent 2-2 draw with Japan.

24 mins: A long punt forward looks to have put Podolski away… but the offside flag is raised and replays suggest it an was extremely close call.

23 mins: The crowd have gone rather quiet which is strange considering their side are winning but now they might be able to cheer again.

22 mins: The Germans are on the front foot again and a driven low shot from Schweinsteiger forces Porras to shovel the ball away.

21 mins: Costa Rica attempt to apply some pressure of their own but Lahm’s cautious header just about reaches Lehmann despite the presence of Wanchope.

20 mins: Germany attack once more but a long range shot from Lukas Podolski flies straight into Porras’ arms.

19 mins: This is the first time these two nations have faced each other but the Germans have won four and drawn one in their previous five World Cup matches against nations from the CONCACAF region.

18 mins: Germany are looking solid once more and now the Wanchope goal appears to be just a momentary blip.

17 mins: GOAL KLOSE – The hosts are back in front after a great pass from Bernd Schneider on the right touchline finds Schweinsteiger just outside the area and the midfielder runs forward past two men before driving a clever low cross to the back post for Klose to stab home.

16 mins: Germany are looking to regain their composure and dominate possession once again but there are red shirts continuously closing them down.

15 mins: There are only 4,000 away fans for this clash but they are making more noise than all the partisan home support put together.

14 mins: The sea of red Costa Rican supporters are understandably going wild and their team have shocked the host nation into silence.

13 mins: Just when it seemed like Germany were going to have it all their own way, Costa Rica are now back on level terms and who’s to say there won’t be an opening day shock again?

12 mins: GOAL WANCHOPE – Out of the blue Costa Rica come forward through the middle and a lovely pass from Ronald Gomez catches the German defence out cold and Paulo Wanchope runs into the area and coolly slots his shot past Jens Lehmann.

11 mins: Germany attack down the right and a floated cross into the area is headed by Klose but the ball trickles wide of the post.

10 mins: Moments later the Costa Rican defence give the ball away inside their own area but they are relieved to see Bastian Schweinsteiger blast over the bar.

9 mins: The hosts have another chance as Klose is put through on goal but Porras comes out to smother the ball. But the danger isn’t over yet.

8 mins: Germany have lost only one of their previous 15 opening matches in a World Cup and it doesn’t look like Costa Rica will trouble them today. The hosts are off to a terrific start and the Central Americans have their work cut out already.

7 mins: What a way to get these finals underway and Lahm’s strike could well end up being the best of the tournament.

6 mins: GOAL LAHM – Philip Lahm picks up the ball wide on the left before cutting inside and curling a wonderful shot high into the far corner of the net giving goalkeeper Jose Porras absolutely no chance.

5 mins: Miroslav Klose, who netted five times in Germany’s 2002 World Cup campaign celebrates his 28th birthday today and is one of nine players from the campaign that finished as runners-up in 2002. And Germany are on the attack again.

4 mins: Torsten Frings has the first shot of the World Cup when he hammers one from nearly 40 yards but with the goalkeeper in trouble, the ball flies narrowly over.

3 mins: After a mixed warm-up campaign consisting solely of friendly games, Germany now need a big performance to get the entire nation rallying behind them. Today’s opponents Costa Rica however have nothing to lose against the three-time world champions as they hope to provide the latest in a long line of opening match upsets. So far neither side have threatened the goals although Germany are keeping hold of possession.

2 mins: No more hype, no more speculation and no more predictions – the time for great goals, emotion, colour, passion and inevitably controversy now takes centre stage. The stadium for this opening clash is packed to capacity as the home fans hope to roar their country on to a perfect start in their World Cup campaign.

1 mins: The long wait is finally over and after all the seemingly endless pre-tournament build-up, Costa Rica get this 18th FIFA World Cup underway against hosts Germany on this sweltering early evening in Munich.

Pre-match: Germany’s World Cup bid has already got off to an inauspicious start with captain and star player Michael Ballack left out of the first XI to play Costa Rica due to injury.

Ballack, who completed a move to Chelsea after the Bundesliga season, has been suffering a calf strain sustained in a friendly against Colombia.

On Friday morning, the player had expressed the hope of playing from the start but coach Jurgen Klinsmann has put Tim Borowski into the line-up in his place.

Injury-free Costa Rica field their strongest squad, including Paulo Wanchope and in-form Ronald Gomez up front.
